A Return to Tradition

While I prefer the camera as a means to modern art, it was an absolute joy to return to photography in a traditional sense to document the stunning visual smorgasbord that is Northern Italy.

From hand-held work in the bustling cities to the sweeping alpine views of the Dolomites, it was an indescribable experience to be surrounded by such new and mesmerizing beauty that the only fitting way to tell their story was to document them just as they appeared before me.

This series is a celebration of the vision that mankind can bring to fruition when inspired by something greater than ourselves. I hope it inspires you, as it has me, in light of the great things that so many have done before us, to continue a path forward in pursuit of your full potential.

At the heart of Milan, Italy lies an architectural wonder 700 years in the making, with some of the greatest minds the world has ever known submitting plans for its construction including Leonardo Da Vinci. While the drive for results can be both a blessing and a curse for those of us with unrelenting ambition in life, many whose life’s work was the Duomo di Milano never lived to see their vision come to full fruition. As the old adage goes, “the best laid plans of mice and men often go awry.” And because results - despite our best efforts - often fall outside our complete control, I think that sometimes our highest or divine calling, is simply to do great work with the resources and the time we are given. And so, the process of spending life in a worthy manner becomes the reward.

A vantage point from a 2000-year-old Roman Bridge offers a glimpse into a scene that before seeing with my own eyes, I might’ve only believed existed in fiction books. From the vibrant shades of green to the water and light that bring them life, to the ruins all but reclaimed by the earth from which they were constructed, everything here seems to work in harmony as if their sole purpose were the timeless preservation of this small outlet feeding into perhaps the most beautiful natural lake in the world. Eden is a window into one of the Crown Jewels of Italy as it may have looked millennia ago.

It has been said that time is the master of us all, but here on on the slopes of the largest alpine meadow in Europe is a scene that seems to have missed the memo. As it has for nearly 800 years, dawn illuminates the awe-inspiring Schlern Massif with the St. Valentin Chapel in its shadow. With a storied past and a name honoring the Christian Priest Valentine - from whom we get our holiday Valentine’s Day - this chapel’s earliest documented mention came in the year 1244 AD. And if the three things that endure are indeed faith, hope, and love, perhaps it is fitting that this monument - crafted to honor both Valentine the patron saint of love as well as the inspirational surrounding landscape - is still standing like new after more than 284,000 sunrises in a location that is truly too beautiful to describe with words.

On our last night before heading back home to Las Vegas, we were rewarded with a scene replete with the quaint charm of a Venice long ago. In a residential area far from the well-worn paths of San Marco Square, this small piazza was alive with the soft buzz of restaurant goers from all over the world dining to an outdoor duet of accordion and cello music. Setting up the old 4x5 camera became a spectacle in and of itself attracting a small crowd of people asking questions in different languages as if this avant garde technology had just been revealed to the world for the first time. I fired off a 1-minute exposure as the last rays of the sun gave way to dusk, taking a brief moment to soak in the last light over the iconic city before returning to my table to finish my meal and another bottle of Franciacorta.
